Swanton Completes First Rangeland Course
Swanton's first Sustainable Livestock and Rangeland Management course was completed this summer. Interrupted by the Lockheed Fire, this course began at Cal Poly and then moved to the ranch once evacuation orders were lifted.
Lockheed Fire News
The Lockheed Fire started August 12, 2009 7:16 pm and burned 7,817 acres. Swanton Pacific Ranch personnel returned home after state fire officials lifted a mandatory evacuation order. No one was hurt and no structures were lost. Firefighters achieved 100% containment on August 23, 2009.
Spotlight on Apples
U-Pick Apples
Apple picking season is now closed for the season, and will re-open in late summer.
Yielding five tons of apples per year, our 2-acre orchard offers multiple varieties of apples. Although varietals are limited to what's on hand, the 12 different varieties ripen in stages throughout the fall months which allows for an extended picking window. The apple orchard is certified and inspected annually by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). In addition to U-Pick harvesting, students and interns hand-pick apples throughout the season for local wholesale.
