Forestry

forest Forested lands are comprised of approximately 1000 acres in Scotts Creek watershed and over 600 acres along Valencia Creek. The forest stands of predominantly second growth Redwood- Douglas fir are managed for commercial production.

Heavy logging occurred during 1909 through 1921 and supported the rebuilding of San Francisco following the 1908 earthquake. Some stands continued to be logged through the 1970s. Today, Swanton Pacific Ranch is pleased to support best management practices (http://www.fire.ca.gov/rsrc-mgt_forestpractice.php) resulting in FSC certification for over 2 years.

Cal Poly students from the Natural Resources Management department attend field trips and training at the ranch to prepare them for a future in responsible forestry and watershed management.
